Alice Through the Looking Glass: Helena Bonham Carter shares favorite part of filming sequel

Helena Bonham Carter’s favorite memory from playing the part of the Red Queen in Alice Through The Looking Glass might surprise you. It has nothing to do with the whimsical makeup she wore in character, donning over-the-top costumes or even craft services (unlimited cookies!). Instead, it has everything to do with her experience creating a quirky, imaginary world with the use of a plain green screen.

“You put me on a horse that was backwards. I was thinking, ‘Geez, are they kidding’? Carter told producer Suzanne Todd in a Facebook Live Q&A Monday of her favorite memory from filming the follow up to 2010’s Alice in Wonderland. “The queen is riding a horse backwards. That was very funny. So I had to sit on a horse, [but] it was not a horse. It was a blue, amazing realistic sculpt[ure] that walked and I had to sit very regally. It was very funny.”

Costar Anne Hathaway – who reprises her role as the White Queen in the upcoming James Bobin-directed tale that picks up with Alice determined to rescue an ailing Mad Hatter from Time’s villainous grasp – also helped create some fun on-set memories with some impromptu karaoke.

“She’s a great singer, so we sang a lot of Wicked,” disclosed Carter. “I was stuck with Anne a lot of the time in a sort of harness hanging 20 feet high up, [and] we had a lot of time.”
