Oscars 2016: Inside Out wins Best Animated Feature

The Oscars likely created a core memory for the team behind inside Out tonight.

Pixar’s animated film took home the Best Animated Feature prize at the 2016 Oscars. This marks Pixar’s first win in the category since Brave and Disney’s continued dominance in the category. Fittingly, the award was presented by Toy Story‘s Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

Director Pete Docter, who accepted the award at Sunday’s ceremony along with producer Jonas Rivera, shared a message for young people going through tough times in their lives: “Anyone out there who’s in junior high, high school, working it out, suffering. There are days you’re gonna feel sad, you’re gonna feel angry, you’re gonna be scared. That’s nothing you can choose, but you can make stuff. Make films. Draw. Write. It’ll make a world of difference.”

Backstage in the press room, Docter added, “I was trying to talk about the difficulty of growing up and how emotions are completely sometimes mysterious and you can’t quite understand what’s going on, so it was really that that drove the making of the film.”

Following the five emotions inside a young girl’s head, Inside Out tells the story of Joy (Amy Poehler) and Sandess (Phyllis Smith) as fight to help keep Riley’s core memories alive while learning the importance of emotions working together along the way. The film also took home the top prize at the Annie Awards and the Best Animated Film award at the BAFTAs.

Inside Out was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, the only animated feature nominated in that category. The film won Best Animated Feature over Anomalisa, Boy & the World, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and When Marnie Was There.
