Box office: Deadpool, Gods of Egypt, Eddie the Eagle, Triple 9

Turns out that not even a team of Egyptian gods can take down Deadpool.

Spending its third weekend at No. 1, Tim Miller's R-rated superhero story took in $31.5 million, easily earning first place and bringing its domestic total to $285.6 million. As a result, it's just passed The Matrix Reloaded to become the third highest-grossing R-rated film in box office history (not adjusting for inflation). The Passion of the Christ is still No. 1 with a lifetime domestic gross of $370.8 million.

But while Deadpool retained its hold on first place, this week's newcomers didn't fare as well.

Gods of Egypt, the swords-and-sandals epic starring Gerard Butler, Brenton Thwaites, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, did the best, but it only brought it an estimated $14 million on a $140 million budget. That was enough to secure second place, but Lionsgate initially launched Gods of Egypt in the hopes of sparking a franchise. Sources say that with Australian tax credits, the studio's exposure on the film is only $10 million, not including marketing costs, but its lackluster box office debut — and its B- CinemaScore — mean that any future installments are dead. (Criticism of the film's predominately white cast didn't help.) Internationally, Gods of Egypt added another $24.2 million, bringing its global debut to $38.2 million.

Eddie the Eagle, which stars Taron Egerton as the real-life British ski jumper Eddie Edwards and Hugh Jackman as his coach, bowed in 2,042 theaters, only bringing in an estimated $6.3 million. It did, however, earn an A CinemaScore, which could give it longer legs.

But this weekend's final new release, the Anthony Mackie and Casey Affleck-starring Triple 9, didn't even managed to crack the top five. With a C+ CinemaScore, John Hillcoat's crime thriller debuted in sixth place with an estimated $6.1 million.

Instead, holdovers Kung Fu Panda 3 and Risen rounded out the top five in third and fourth place, respectively. Kung Fu Panda 3, now in its fifth week, added another $9 million to its $128.5 million domestic total. Risen, the faith-based film starring Joseph Fiennes, fell 41 percent for a second weekend of $7 million. Its domestic total is now at $22.7 million.

And with the Academy Awards airing Sunday, some of this year's Best Picture nominees also saw an impressive uptick at the box office. The Brie Larson-starring Room jumped 59 percent in its 20th weekend of release, adding another $650,000 for a $13.5 million domestic total. The journalism drama Spotlight also rose 51 percent in its 17th weekend, adding $788,000 to its $39.2 million total, and The Big Short made $1 million in its 12th week, rising 12 percent for a $68.5 million total.

The Revenant and Brooklyn also saw miniscule declines, with The Revenant falling only 2 percent in its 10th week and Brooklyn dropping only 4 percent in its 17th. The Revenant's domestic total is now at $170.5 million, and Brooklyn's is at $36.5 million.
