Jane the Virgin: What's next for Michael and Jane?

SPOILER ALERT: The following contains details from “Chapter 34,” Monday’s episode of Jane the Virgin. Read at your own risk!

For Jane and Michael, first came love, and what came next was, well, complicated. There was a baby (not his), an insane love triangle (thanks for that, Rafael) and then an appearance by a nutty drug lord named Sin Rostro.

That said, the future looks bright for Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Michael (Brett Dier), who finally admitted to one another what #TeamMichael shippers have known all along: They are totally, head-over-heels in love with one another.

“Honestly, I didn’t know that was going to happen until the day before we shot that episode,” says Dier of the scene in “Chapter 34” where Michael reveals his feelings. “It was a bit of a shock, but they [the writers] keep everything a secret to keep us on our toes.”

Given showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman’s hints of a wedding this season, is it safe to assume that Michael might be wearing a groom’s tux sometime in a future episode? Not necessarily, says Dier.

“Things get all over the place, but in a very creative, good way,” teases Dier. “Jennie does love to play with people’s minds. You never have an idea how it’s going to work out, which is what I personally love about the show.”

In fact, Jane and Michael’s first challenge as a couple looks like it might be getting some alone time — never mind walking down the aisle. As seen in the clip above, it looks like Rafael has no intention of making it easy for Michael to woo his baby mama.

“Things get really intense because of Rafael, because it’s not like Jane can just leave the baby to be with Michael,” shares Dier. “Obviously, Michael and Rafael have never gotten along, and that’s not going to happen overnight. They both have to mature and get over their ego, which is their own journey to go on. It’ll be hard, but it will lead to some funny scenes.”

All of which begs the question of how #TeamRafael fans have reacted to the newest turn in the topsy-turvy situation that is Jane’s love life.

“Honestly, I’ve gotten some crazy tweets,” says Dier, laughing. “But when fans tweet that they hate Michael, I usually favorite them. I feel like that makes them a little more Team Michael, kind of like reverse psychology.”

And while we’re on the subject of crazy, where do things stand in the matter of Mutter? In the last episode, the mysterious villain killed off Rose, but Mutter is still on the loose, making for an unresolved plot point that’s sure to drive Det. Cordero crazy.

“It’s going to be intense, because now that Sin Rostro is dead, you know Mutter is going to kick things up a notch,” says Dier. “Sin Rostro was a really bad person, and now there’s someone out there that’s even worse.”

But female baddies and bad blood with Rafael aside, things are definitely looking up for Michael — especially since his rekindled relationship with Jane means that he can resume his bromance with her dad, Rogelio.

“I love the dynamic between the two characters,” says Dier. “Filming that breakup between the two of them was heartbreaking for me and Jamie [Camil]. We didn’t want to film it. We kept stalling, saying ‘I have to go to the bathroom.’ But there’s going to be some fun scenes between the two of them in the future, for sure.”
