BAFTA Awards nominations 2016: 'Carol,' 'Bridge of Spies' lead pack

Carol missed out on a key nomination from the Producers Guild this week, but Todd Haynes’ critically acclaimed romance rebounded in a big way at Friday morning’s BAFTA awards nominations. Carol grabbed nine total nods, including Best Film, best director for Haynes, best actress for Cate Blanchett, and best supporting actress for Rooney Mara.

Carol tied Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies for the most nominations at BAFTA, with Alejandro Iñárritu’s The Revenant close behind at eight nods.

Those three period films were joined in the Best Film category by a pair of more contemporary features: Adam McKay’s The Big Short and Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, the presumed frontrunner for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. But despite the nomination for Best Film, McCarthy’s drama, about the group of Boston Globe journalists who helped uncovered a sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church, scored only two other nominations: Mark Ruffalo for best supporting actor and McCarthy and Josh Singer for best screenplay. McCarthy himself missed out on a best director nod, as the category was filled up by expected names (Iñárritu, Haynes, Spielberg and The Martian director Ridley Scott) and one big surprise (McKay).

Other snubs to note: George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road earned seven total nominations, but missed on film and director; David O. Russell’s Joy was shut out completely, including Jennifer Lawrence in the best actress category; Straight Outta Comptom and Creed were also blanked by the BAFTA awards; Star Wars: The Force Awakens nabbed four technical nominations, but not Best Film; and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight failed to garner support in the film and director categories, but did score Tarantino a nomination for best screenplay.

Elsewhere: Alicia Vikander was nominated twice. The actress took home a supporting actress nomination for Ex Machina and a best actress nod for The Danish Girl. Tom Hooper’s film, about transgender pioneer Lili Elbe was also nominated for best actor (Eddie Redmayne), best costume design, best makeup and hair, and Outstanding British Film.
