The Big Short receive Ensemble Film Award at Palm Springs International Film Festival

On the heels of announcing that Trumbo actor Bryan Cranston would receive the Actor Spotlight Award at The Palm Springs International Film Festival’s annual gala this weekend, the festival has announced another honor: the presentation of the Ensemble Film Award to The Big Short. The award will honor the film’s cast, which includes Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Brad Pitt.

Carell, Bale and director Adam McKay will be on hand to accept the honor at Saturday’s ceremony.

“Wall Street greed and its reverberating effects on the U.S. economy offer a modern backdrop for director Adam McKay’s smart and funny film The Big Short, adapted from the best-selling book by Michael Lewis,” Film Festival Chairman Harold Matzner said in a statement. “Taking a complicated subject — the 2008 subprime mortgage bond crisis — McKay and his perfectly cast stars weave an engaging comedic story of a group of oddball money managers who see the train wreck coming and conspire to benefit.”

With this honor, the film joins the ranks of past winners for Ensemble Performance, including Argo, American Hustle, Babel, The Imitation Game and The Social Network. Based on Michael Lewis’ best-selling true story, The Big Short has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Steve Carell and Christian Bale), as well as two Screen Actors Guild Awards and seven Critics Choice Awards.
