British Independent Film Awards winners: 'Ex Machina' named Best Independent Film

Alex Garland’s directorial debut Ex Machina won big at the 2015 Moët British Independent Film Awards on Sunday, taking home a total of four awards and winning Best British Independent Film. Garland won both Best Director and Best Screenplay, and Ex Machina VFX supervisor Andrew Whitehurst was recognized for Oustanding Achievement in Craft.

Other big winners include Lenny Abrahamson’s Room , which was named Best International Independent Film. Tom Hardy was named Best Actor for his role in Legend, and Saiorse Ronan won Best Actress for Brooklyn. Brendan Gleeson won Best Supporting Actor for Suffragette and beat out his son, Domhnall Gleeson, who was also nominated for his role in Brooklyn.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster led with the most nominations going into the ceremony, racking up seven nods including Best Film and Best Director, and Olivia Colman won Best Supporting Actress for her role.
