The Iceman returneth? Potentially! Actor and frequent social media user Val Kilmer announced on Facebook he was offered a role for the in-limbo Top Gun 2.

“I just got offered #topgun2 – not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script…” the original post reads. “We will all miss [original director] Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I’ve ever met in the film biz, but let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!”

The post had an update about nine hours later, however, clarifying that Kilmer’s involvement wasn’t imminent.

“This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role,” Kilmer wrote. “I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…”

Producer David Ellison said this summer that a screenplay was in the works from Justin Marks (The Jungle Book). The plot would detail how drones have rendered pilots like Tom Cruise’s Maverick and Kilmer’s Iceman irrelevant. Cruise himself also said in summer that throwing on the flight vest would be “fun to do.”

A follow-up to the 1986 action drama has been floated around for at least five years, with Cruise and Scott in talks to both return. After Scott’s death in 2012, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he still had plans to make a sequel.

Paramount and Bruckheimer’s reps had no comment on the status of Top Gun 2. Reps for Kilmer did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment.
