Box office report: 'The Martian' No. 1 again as 'Pan' fails to take flight

The Martian spent its second straight weekend at the top of the box office, as newcomer Pan fell flat.

Warner Bros.’ $150 million Peter Pan retelling failed to get off the ground, debuting to an estimated $15.5 million in more than 3,500 theaters. That’s a decidedly rough start — and well below initial expectations of $20 million. Reviews haven’t been great, and Pan earned a B+ CinemaScore and a 23 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Pan, which was originally scheduled for July 17 but was pushed back earlier this year, was directed by Joe Wright and stars Hugh Jackman. Pan hopes to have a better showing overseas, and it rolled out this weekend in 52 territories. It’ll also open in China on Oct. 22, which should help boost its global total.

The Walk also had a bit of a lackluster showing, and after it expanded from 448 IMAX locations to more than 2,500 theaters this weekend, it only earned an estimated $3.7 million, not even cracking the top five. The Phillipe Petit biopic, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, now has a domestic total of $6.4 million.

First place instead went to holdover The Martian, which fell only 32 percent in its second weekend for an estimated $37 million. Its domestic total is already at $108.7 million. Second place went to Hotel Transylvania 2, which brought in $20.3 million in its third weekend for a domestic total of $116.8 million.

Holdovers The Intern and Sicario rounded out the top five, with The Intern dropping only 26 percent for a third weekend of $8.7 million. Its domestic total is now $49.6 million. Sicario fell 39 percent in its second weekend in wide release, earning an estimated $7.4 million for a domestic total of $26.7 million.

At the specialty box office, Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs opened to $520,942 in only four theaters, for a per-theater average of $130,235. That shatters the record Sicario set only a few weeks ago for the best per-theater average of the year, and it actually marks the 15th best weekend theater average of all time.
