Charlie Puth introduces 'Marvin Gaye' in EW video

Charlie Puth is setting aside his “See You Again” vocals for something a little sexier. “I just saw all these pretty girls around and I wanted to make an anthem for guys and girls to…get together,” Charlie Puth, 23, tells EW sheepishly as he introduces his current single “Marvin Gaye” in our latest From The Basement video.

The song was the first Puth wrote after relocating to Los Angeles to pursue music full-time. “I really had no idea what I was doing,” he says. The studio version features a familiar voice and one of Puth’s good friends, Meghan Trainor. Puth was previously featured in the “All About That Bass” singer’s “Dear Future Husband” music video and prior to Trainor suffering a second vocal hemorrhage in August, the two were on tour together.

While you won’t hear Trainor on the tune below, Puth fills her spots with an insane beat-boxing solo. Check it out below.

EW spoke to Puth this spring and he detailed how he and Trainor originally linked up for the song. “We actually met at a party in the Hollywood Hills,” he remembered. “I played her a very early demo version of ‘Marvin Gaye’ and she memorized the song and sang it in the studio a week later.”

As for the weirdest fan reactions he’s received from the song he admits, “I get some interesting messages sometimes,” while laughing. “I actually get a lot of messages with people saying, ‘What’s a Marvin Gaye?’ and, I mean…oh, wow. I must be getting old, because someone born in 2004 just asked me what a Marvin Gaye was.”
