Anomalisa: Charlie Kaufman movie out this year

Charlie Kaufman’s latest, a stop-motion animated film, has found distribution and a release date for later this year after screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Anomalisa, which was partially funded through Kickstarter, has been acquired by Paramount Pictures, and will hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 30. The film, written by Kaufman and co-directed by the screenwriter and Duke Johnson, tells the story of family man named Michael Stone (David Thewlis) who, while on a business trip, finds some escape from his monotonous life when he meets Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh).

Kaufman, writer of films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation has paired with Johnson, who has plenty of stop-motion animated experience, including the “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas” episode of Community. Dan Harmon and Dino Stamatopoulos, both Community alums, are among the film’s producers.

Anomalisa won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, and also screened at the Telluride Film Festival before arriving at TIFF. For more on the Toronto film festival, follow along with EW’s continuing coverage.
