Between MTV’s Scream reboot, Ryan Murphy’s new Jamie Lee Curtis-starring TV show Scream Queens, and the upcoming film Some KInd of Hate, the slasher genre is enjoying something of a resurrection this year — which seems appropriate given the routinely unkillable nature of its psychopathic antagonists.

But it is new movie The Final Girls which pays deepest homage to the slasher film’s late ’70s and ’80s heyday. Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas), the film stars Taissa Farmiga as a high school senior named Max, the daughter of an actress (Malin Akerman), who finds herself trapped in one of her mother’s old movies, the Friday the 13th-esque Camp Bloodbath.

Also along for the bloody ride are characters played by Nina Dobrev, Adam DeVine, Alexander Ludwig, Angela Trimbur, Alia Shawkat, Tory N. Thompson, and Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch.

Stage 6 Films with Vertical Entertainment is releasing The Final Girls in theaters and on VOD and digital platforms Oct. 9.
