Mortal Kombat X story trailer jumps to the future, introduces a new generation of fighters

The Mortal Kombat franchise is primarily famous for its over-the-top and gratuituous gore. (There’s a whole Wikipedia page dedicated to the controversies the long-running fighting game franchise has incited.) Violence, however, isn’t the only thing that’s kept fans coming back to the series for well over a decade. Mortal Kombat has also built up an elaborate mythology over the years, a story way more inolved than either of those movies or even that one animated series ever hinted at.

Developer NetherRealm has gotten exceptionally good at integrating crazy blockbuster stories into their fighting games. For a shining example, see the latest trailer for the forthcoming Mortal Kombat X, which introduces the game’s story (set 25 years after the last Mortal Kombat) and a new generation of characters on the hunt for a Talisman. Sound familiar?

Mortal Kombat X is on sale April 14, 2015 for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
