Mindy Project's Mindy Kaling on Mindy's pregnancy

The Mindy Project took a shocking turn during Tuesday’s episode by abruptly sending Danny (Chris Messina) and Mindy (Mindy Kaling) to the next step in their relationship.

No, we’re not talking about marriage, or even the fact that Danny bought them a New York brownstone while Mindy mulled a move to the west coast. They’ve jumped right over moving in together and straight to babies. That’s right, Mindy is pregnant. Will we actually see a baby this season? Kaling is staying coy, but the star and executive producer did offer up some scoop on how this all came together and what’s next:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When did the idea for Mindy to get pregnant first come up in the writers’ room?

MINDY KALING: That’s something we have been talking about since season one. We always like doing things out of order for Danny and Mindy, since they are a couple that, on paper, shouldn’t work.

How did that go down in the writers’ room? Did everyone agree or was there some hesitation?

KALING: Whenever we do anything this big and series-altering, there is always a big discussion. Those are the most fun days in the writers’ room, actually. I think everyone always wanted to do it, it was just a matter of when.

Will Mindy struggle with breaking the news to Danny?

KALING: Yes! All of next week’s episode is Mindy’s challenge to tell Danny. It’s incredibly funny and poignant. It’s one of our best episodes, called “Dinner At The Castellanos.”

How does the pregnancy affect her decision on whether to open a practice in San Francisco?

KALING: The pregnancy actually motivates Mindy more, professionally. That is something I observed to be true of a lot of women I know. It gives Mindy even more reason to succeed.

What can you tease for the baby-esque issues Mindy will be facing in the coming episodes?

KALING: We aren’t done with the season yet, but pregnant Mindy is the most fun version of her yet. This is not a woman who rolls with discomfort and change very well, and it’s especially funny because she is an OB/GYN. Also seeing an unwilling Mindy adjust to her new growing body has been really funny to write.

What do you want to say to the fans who may be worried that Mindy’s pregnancy will affect the show?

KALING: I know people were worried when Danny and Mindy got together, but I think that the show just got more complicated and deepened our understanding of the characters. This is like that only better, because it’s like Mindy and Danny are collaborating on the most worthy project now. Parenting brings out sides in them we have not seen, and we get to learn more about their families as a result.
