Binge!: 'Felicity'

Just in time for fall semester, let's brush up on one of TV's best collegiate dramas (no pop quizzes, we promise!)

What It’s About
Few young-adult dramas have chronicled the college experience with as much honesty, heart, and humor as The WB’s Felicity (streaming on Hulu Plus). Created by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Star Trek) and Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), the series (which ran from 1998 to 2002) centers on Keri Russell’s titular naive California girl, who abandons her premed plans at Stanford University to follow her high school crush, Ben (Scott Speedman), across the country to the fictitious University of New York. And while some of the show’s ephemera are painfully dated (see: butterfly barrettes, floppy disks), the coming-of-age story lines — and the great Team Ben/Team Noel debate — are, happily, timeless.

Key Players
Felicity Porter, Keri Russell
Her hair may be wild, but Felicity is the consummate good girl — that is, until she defies her parents’ wishes in order to chase Ben to New York City. She soon finds herself torn between him and her sweetly steadfast RA, Noel (Scott Foley), which only exacerbates her tendency to obsess.

Ben Covington, Scott Speedman
A hunk — and a bit of a cipher (think Jordan Catalano) — who captures Felicity’s heart in high school.

Julie Emrick, Amy Jo Johnson
Often found with guitar in hand, Julie is Felicity’s BFF — and sometime romantic rival.

Sean Blumberg, Greg Grunberg
Ben’s slightly older roommate is a creative — albeit frustrated — entrepreneur.

Noel Crane, Scott Foley
This computer nerd is the tender third in one of the most tortured love triangles in pop culture history.

Elena Tyler, Tangi Miller
Felicity’s first lab partner and close friend, she’s an outspoken premed student.

Meghan Rotundi, Amanda Foreman
This Wiccan is Felicity’s freshman-year roommate/frenemy…who later turns into just a friend.

Notable Alumni
Janeane Garofalo She voiced Sally Reardon, Felicity’s former French tutor, who sends heartfelt advice via cassette tape.

Kenan Thompson The Saturday Night Live star had a recurring role in season 3 as a brainy premed major.

John Cho Before appearing in Abrams’ Star Trek, Cho cameoed in season 1 as a student convinced his roommate wants to kill him.

Tyra Banks In a brief arc in season 2, the supermodel played a college student and Noel’s love interest.
