'Hobbit 3' has a new title!

Peter Jackson’s first two Hobbit movies collectively grossed almost two billion dollars, proving once and for all that people can’t get enough of wacky dwarf action mixed in with the occasional dragon. (Also that one-handed orc, remember him?) And the third Hobbit movie promises to be even more of a box office bounty, what with the fact that stuff actually happens.

To stress that “stuff happens” aspect of the movie, Jackson has announced a title change. Previously known as The Hobbit: There and Back Again, the final Hobbit film will now go under the moniker The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. In a Facebook post, Jackson explains that the original title — conceived in those long-ago days when there was that crazy idea of only making two Hobbit movies — no longer really made sense.

He also promises the arrival of an extended cut of The Desolation of Smaug with over 25 minutes of new scenes, hopefully involving Bard the Bowman doing more fun stuff with his bow. Besides firing it. Because, as Chekhov once said, “If you introduce a character named Bard the Bowman in act 7, be sure he eventually gets around to firing a bow in like act 17 or whatever.”
