'RoboCop' premiere, On the Scene: 6 epic moments

The carpet might have been black at the RoboCop reboot’s Los Angeles premiere Monday night, but the festivities were anything but dark. Read on for our favorite moments of the night:

1. Batman shows up dressed as Michael Keaton. That’s right, the caped crusader who’s been in a bit of a cave for the past decade (besides voicing all those Pixar movies) is back and better than ever as the OmniCorp CEO with the fantastic idea of designing a half-man, half-machine police officer to rid Detroit of its criminals. A little robot-making from Mr. Keaton, and the remake of the 1987 sci-fi classic RoboCop is born.

2. Batman meets the new Commissioner Gordon. Gary Oldman rolled onto the carpet at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood with a story about how he and Keaton “pinched each other” when they realized they were both in Batman movies. Oldman said he told Keaton, “You know, I’m Nolan’s last Gordon and you’re Burton’s first Batman.” Keaton played Batman/Bruce Wayne twice, while Oldman played Jim Gordon three times. And oh, Oldman was also Dracula. Pretty awesome.

3. Freddy Krueger says he can take down RoboCop. No problem. Speaking of remakes, Jackie Earle Haley, who played Freddy Krueger in the 2010 version of A Nightmare on Elm Street and also stars in the new RoboCop as OmniCorp’s military tactician, put his nails into the conversation. When asked if Freddy would beat RoboCop in a fight, Haley said, “If RoboCop fell asleep, yes.” Haley agreed such a match-up would be a great idea for a sequel. And he had a title: Robo Meets Freddy.

4. Jay Baruchel waxes nostalgic about Batman. Baruchel, who stars in the new RoboCop as an OmniCorp marketing exec, reminisced about seeing Keaton and Oldman realize they were both in Caped Crusader movies. “It was pretty cool,” Baruchel said. “I got to watch Batman meet Gordon.” Baruchel, also the star of the very successful film This Is the End, knows — just like his characters — how to add the laughs. His idea of a great cyborg: “Some sort of robot that goes around giving people hamburgers and weed. That’s the robot I’m signing up for.”

5. Red from That ’70s Show goes old school. Actor Kurtwood Smith from the 1987 RoboCop showed up to support the remake. He played a gang leader — and if you thought he was scary as Eric’s father in That ’70s Show, you need to re-watch the first film. What’s he up to now? He voices Jim Gordon in the animated show Beware the Batman. Is this some kind of club?

6. Joel Kinnaman, a.k.a. RoboCop himself, makes a hefty statement. Kinnaman said his character would take down all these legends. No matter how epic it seemed to have Batman, Dracula, and Freddy Krueger (not to mention Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson) in the same movie, RoboCop would come out on top. The 34-year-old Killing star had no trouble saying that “without a doubt” he would annihilate them all. “And those guys are really old now too, so RoboCop can take them down real easy.” Apparently, there’s a lot you can do with an extra hard drive.
