J.J. Abrams isn’t the only one with lingering thoughts about Khan’s identity in Star Trek Into Darkness. The director told MTV News that he regretted the secretive marketing stategy and how they handled the actual reveal of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in the film, “The goal was not to ruin it for anyone that went to go see it.”

Abrams chalked up the contrived mystery around the character to studio marketing wishes: “Because it was so important to the studio, that we not angle this thing for existing fans,” he told MTV. “It felt like if we said it was Khan, it would feel like you really gotta know what Star Trek is about to see this movie and that would’ve been limiting. So I could understand their argument to try and keep that quiet but I do wonder if it would have seemed a little bit less like an attempt at deception or something if we had just come out with it.”
