Chart report: Ariana Grande's 'Yours Truly' debuts at No. 1

So this is what happens when you put out “one of the most purely enjoyable albums of the year”!

Pop newcomer Ariana Grande’s Yours Truly has debuted atop the Billboard 200, making her the first woman to see her first album start at No. 1 since Ke$ha back in 2010. Truly sold 138,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan, which handily places the 20-year-old ahead of the four other artists with new albums in the top ten.

Landing at No. 2 is Tamar Braxton’s Love & War, with 114,000 moved units. Interestingly, Billboard reports that Braxton actually outsold Grande in terms of physical CDs — 63,000 to 30,000 — but lost the digital battle, and thus the overall war. Still, it’s enough to earn her the top spot on the physical albums chart.

Trailing both ladies was Nine Inch Nails’ comeback album Hesitation Marks, which slotted at No. 3, with 107,000. Yay for Trent Reznor for steering NIN to its sixth overall top-ten album.

Elsewhere, R&B classicist John Legend found his latest set, Love in the Future, debuting at No. 4, with 68,000; former chart-topper Luke Bryan slipped to No. 5, with just under 68,000; and Jaheim’s Appreciation Day snuck in at No. 6, with 58,000.

Here’s the rest of the chart, with minimal commentary: Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines dropped to No. 7 (57,000); Avenged Sevenfold — last week’s No. 1 — went to No. 8 (42,000); Mr. Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience lingered at No. 9 (38,000); and indefatigable Nevada rockers Imagine Dragons showed up at No. 10 (35,000).
