Disney's 'Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel': Watch Stan Lee's cameo

As a kid, Stan Lee wanted to be an actor. Fortunately for millions of superhero fans, he carved out a different career path and created iconic Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man. But Lee still has found his way onto both the big and small screen, though if you had told him at the beginning of his career that his work in the comic book industry would someday earn him dozens of cameo roles, he “wouldn’t have believed it, no way,” he told EW.

Just as he’s had his few seconds of screentime in movies like Spider-Man and The Avengers, Lee will appear in Disney Channel’s upcoming special, Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel, which teams up Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Spider-Man with enterprising step-brothers Phineas and Ferb. He reprises his cameo role from 2000’s X-Men, a hot dog vendor.

Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel is the first animated crossover for Marvel and Disney, something Lee is very excited to see.

“The idea of Marvel and Disney doing something together is just wonderful,” he said. “Years ago, when I was at Marvel, my dream was to make Marvel the type of company that Disney is, and when Disney bought Marvel, I couldn’t believe it. I felt it was the best thing that could happen, and with cartoons like this, now I’m sure it’s the best thing that could happen.”

When Lee recorded his voice appearances for the Disney Channel special, he was rather animated himself, arms outstretched with enthusiasm for several takes, easily provoking laughter from those gathered in the studio. He of course wore his signature aviator sunglasses. Though he took off the aviators during his interview with EW, he immediately put them back on afterward, quipping, “Now i’ll put on these glasses that don’t do a bit of good, but everybody says, ‘You gotta wear them so it’ll look like you.'”

Phineas and Ferb co-creator Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, who gave Lee direction at the recording session, told EW that he relished the chance to work with Lee because the 90-year-old comic book writer “is a guy that I grew up with as one of my heroes. He fed my imagination for many, many years.”

That power drain-inator — which Phineas and Ferb fans will know is one of many of the villain Dr. Doofenschmirtz’s inventions — is just one new contraption introduced by the special. He also creates a waffle-inator — and a 40-foot high interactive game called “The Phineas and Ferb Waffle-inator Challenge,” complete with simulated waffles, will be a central fixture of this weekend’s D23 Expo, the biannual celebration of all things Disney at the Anaheim Convention Center. The game will be available to play in Grand Plaza near the entrance to the expo Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
