'Cheers' alum joins 'Bones' couples retreat

When Booth (David Boreanaz) and Bones (Emily Deschanel) work a case at a couples retreat in an upcoming episode, they’re going to run into someone whose name Cheers fans certainly know.

EW has learned exclusively that John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff on the long-running NBC comedy, is set to appear in the second episode of Bones‘s ninth season, playing Bill Schumacher, who with his wife Ethel goes to a couples retreat to work on a few personal problems. The catch? Bill and Ethel have a secret double life that they will struggle to keep private.

As previously reported, the second episode of the season will find Booth and Bones going undercover to solve a crime at the aforementioned retreat, an ironic assignment considering the pair will continue to experience fallout from last season’s un-engagement.

Bones returns Sept. 16.
