'Good Wife': Josh Charles takes the EW Pop Culture Personality Test

Image

On Sunday, The Good Wife closes its fourth season with a finale that Josh Charles promises will set the show up nicely for the fall. “Things are gonna get very complicated, in a good way,” he says. We believe him: There’s that promo that shows Diane (Christine Baranski) busting Will (Charles) and Alicia (Julianna Margulies) in a liplock. We know Cary (Matt Czuchry) continues maneuvering to start his own firm. And Alicia, Will, and Diane face off against Patti Nyholm (Martha Plimpton), in front of Judge Abernathy (Denis O’Hare), in a series of emergency court proceedings after Zach believes he’s witnessed vote tampering on the night of Peter’s gubernatorial election.

Charles took the Fifth on giving us spoilers, but he did happily submit to an EW Pop Culture Personality Test — revealing the TV shows that make him cry, something from his childhood he lost and wishes he still had, his geekiest possession, his first concert, and more.

Bonus questions!

When do you yell at the TV?

I yell at the TV often when I’m watching sporting events and I think there’s maybe a bad call. So perhaps at a referee or an umpire. Or a player who did something that I did not like or I liked — it can be both positive yelling and negative yelling.

What movie do you have to watch every time you spot it on cable?

The Godfather, I and II. That’s like crack cocaine for me. If that’s on, I just cancel anything and sit there and watch it. I can’t help it.

What’s your most prized pop culture possession?

One would be my picture of me and Johnny Unitas that’s autographed. I have a couple vintage guitars that I really like to play. I care about those because I’m left-handed, so it’s really hard to get vintage left-handed guitars. Those have taken an incredible amount of work to find scouring the Internet, various vintage guitar dealers around the world. [Laughs] When I get these things, I plan to keep them for the reminder of my life.

What’s the most embarrassing song you’ve tried to learn to play?

I could get lost on YouTube watching people play different cover versions of songs. There’s a younger guy playing a really cool, stripped-down version of “Irreplaceable.” I’m a big Beyonce fan, I love her. So I thought that would be cool to learn. But it’s tricky finger-picking on that one, so I’m trying.

Name a song you wish you’d written.

Pretty much any Bob Dylan song. “Buckets of Rain.” I also really like the song “Forever Young.” That’s a beautiful song. I always imagined when I have kids, I’ll sing them that. His music is like any great work of art: You dive into it, and you just keep finding more and more layers to it. I never tire of it. I went to an auction a while ago that was for a film foundation, and there were all these big items, and then there was this one that you would have thought a lot of people would jump at — a signed Bob Dylan lyrics book. I, of course, wanted it, and I have it. That’s pretty cool. He doesn’t sign a lot of stuff, I’ve been told.
