Not Fade Away (2012, R) John Magaro, James Gandolfini, Jack Huston It’s back to the Garden State for The Sopranos auteur David Chase, who directed this autobiographical coming-of-age tale of teenage rock & roll rebellion in the ’60s. B

Silver Linings Playbook (2012, R) Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro Dysfunction — both familial and mental — rules in the mood-swinging dramedy about two misfits who find each other. (Lawrence, meanwhile, found an Academy Award for her performance.) A

Broken City (2013, R) Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones A throwback thriller that presents New York as a sleazy den of corruption ruled by Crowe’s heartless, string-pulling mayor. B-

The Details (2012, R) Laura Linney, Elizabeth Banks, Tobey Maguire The placid, plastic surface of suburbia is once again a canvas for bitter satire in this black comedy about adultery, murder, and a serious raccoon problem. B

Strictly Ballroom (1993, PG) Paul Mercurio, Tara Morice Baz Luhrmann’s debut about dancing Down Under is as spangly and effervescent as any of his later work. B-

Jack Reacher (2012, PG-13) Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike This confounding adaptation of Lee Child’s popular novels is choked with visual clichés and dreadfully moldy dialogue. C+ 5/7
