Fake bands, real fun

Tom Hanks' fizzy ode to 1960s pop, ''That Thing You Do,'' is now out on Blu-ray. Its made-up musical act the Wonders got us thinking about our favorite movies featuring great fictional bands. Here are our inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fake.

? This is Spiñal Tap

The Beatles of terrible music, Spinal Tap may have had more hair on their heads than brains in them, but 11 out of 10 fans agree that they were also a spot-on parody of 1980s rock & roll self-seriousness.

? Fear of a Black Hat

This hip-hop mockumentary trades in the superfluous umlauts of Spinal Tap for the dubious social awareness of gangsta rappers N.W.H. (N—-z With Hats). If you ever wanted to know the deep meaning behind a song called ”Booty Juice,” this one’s for you.

? Almost Famous

Cameron Crowe took a camera on his walk down memory lane. The result is a wistful re-creation of his early days of music journalism, with tunes by Stillwater — not related to the actual ’70s rock group of the same name.

? The Commitments

The working-class Irish soul group at the center of this sweet little movie is like a Jamaican bobsled team: delightfully defying expectations through its mere existence.

? Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

As much about the music as it is about its hyperbolized relationships or Nintendo aesthetics, this hyperactive Gen-Y masterpiece features excellent Beck-penned tunes played by the in-movie band Sex Bob-Omb. Bass battle!
