Getting the party started at SXSW

What came out of the festival

The stars have descended on Austin for the South by Southwest festival, where films like Spring Breakers and Matthew McConaughey’s Mud screened in hopes of building hype. Here are some highlights from the movie and tech portions. (The music side wraps up March 17.)

? Much Ado About Nothing Joss Whedon unveiled his surprisingly sexy Shakespeare adaptation, which boasts a cast of Whedonite faves like Alexis Denisof and Nathan Fillion. The beloved director also teased his upcoming ABC pilot S.H.I.E.L.D., which will resurrect The Avengers‘ Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). Whedon says, ”It’s about the people who didn’t win that lottery and aren’t heroes in that world.”

? Tech Marvels Google Glass, the company’s futuristic augmented-reality eyewear, stole the show, but MakerBot’s 3-D scanner had fans tweeting away as well.

? Evil Dead Rises (Again) The over-the-top bloody reboot earned great buzz. No wonder director Fede Alvarez says they’ve ”already started writing” a sequel.
