Key and Peele on 'Key and Peele': The duo discuss their favorite skits

Last week we offered up an exclusive sneak peek of a hilarious sketch from tonight’s episode of Key & Peele. But if you’re like us, you’re still not done enjoying memorable skits from the Comedy Central series’ past. Luckily, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele aren’t either.

The duo have been buddies since their days as MadTV players, and over time they developed a unique comedy rapport. Together, they’ve seen their sketch series — now in its second season — become a favorite amongst fans and presidents alike. (When visiting Jimmy Fallon, Obama said that the Key & Peele skits featuring Obama’s Anger Translator were “good stuff.”) And in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, which you can pick up on stands now, we asked Key and Peele to break down four of their most popular sketches to date.

“Auction Block”

“We realized this is Key & Peele,” says Key, praising the sketch’s “zigzag quality.” Inspired in part by the 1989 Civil War drama Glory, Peele came up with the premise himself. “There’s something innately funny in the double humiliation,” he notes. Luckily, there was still a bit of wiggle room for Key to work his magic. As he tells us, “One line I improvised was at the very end of the scene: ‘I just walked right onto a boat. Never seen a boat before in my life!'”

“I Said Biiitch”

“This is one of the first scenes Keegan and I wrote,” Peele says. And as he explains in the magazine, it wouldn’t have ever happened if it hadn’t been for a certain season of ABC’s The Bachelorette.

“Chris Brown and Rihanna 2gether”

“We mixed spikes and Ziggy Stardust,” Key says of his Rihanna costume. “And then we just tucked me in everywhere we could — a lot of tucking.”

“Obama — The College Years”

Says Peele, “I figured Obama in college would be like Stiles from Teen Wolf: the charismatic guy that brought the party together.” And in the magazine, Key fills us in on the true weed-related stories from Obama’s youth that informed their gags. Hint: It involves “a marijuana-smoking team.”
