Roth’s edgy YA debut, landing in stores weeks after Summit snapped up the movie rights, is set in a dystopian Chicago comprising five factions: Amity (where the peaceful folks live), Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent). Enter 16-year-old Beatrice ”Tris” Prior, who’s about to participate in the city’s annual Choosing ceremony to learn her faction. But the process, never simple, turns downright dangerous after her aptitude test comes back with odd results. Divergent is no Hunger Games; it’s much flimsier and less nuanced. Still, I’m hooked — and ready for the sequel. B+
