'Glee': Should Blaine be Kurt's boyfriend?

Ryan Murphy still hasn’t decided the answer to the million dollar question. The Glee exec producer tells AfterElton.com that while Darren Criss — who was an instant hit with fans (and on iTunes) singing lead on the Dalton Academy Warblers’ rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” — has become a series regular, he’s still not sure if he’ll be Kurt’s boyfriend. “I don’t know,” Murphy said. “That I have not decided. We’re writing it. I want to see what people’s reaction to that is. Part of me thinks he should be the boyfriend, part of me thinks he should just be the mentor. I didn’t want to decide that until we got into sort of the middle of the season. We’re figuring it out now.” What do you think? The question isn’t whether Kurt should get a boyfriend this season — Murphy makes clear that’s definitely happening — it’s whether the boyfriend should be Blaine.

I see Murphy’s dilemma. After the emotional and physical beating Kurt has taken this season (get the scoop on the Nov. 23 episode here), we want him to be happy, and he seemed immediately smitten with Blaine. But there’s something nice about Kurt having a friend now who truly understands him. That’s what he needs even more than a love interest. Plus, if the Glee producers plan for Blaine to stick around for the long haul, they’ll have more story to play with if he’s just the mentor for now. That way, you keep some of the tension between them. Maybe Blaine has a boyfriend, and Kurt is a bit jealous. Then when Kurt finally agrees that they’re better off as friends and starts dating someone, Blaine realizes he’s jealous. And that’s the end of season 2. Then sometime in season 3, you get a moment that rivals Watts and Keith at the end of Some Kind of Wonderful.
