'Sons of Anarchy': Charlie Hunnam hopes season 3 brings Jax 'a little peace.' Good luck with that!

Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam (Jax) is making news this week with his screenplay for Vlad, the story of the real-life prince who inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Read our Q&A about the film and who he’d like to see cast as The Impaler here. But since we’re still talking about last week’s bloody season 2 finale (which just hit Hulu today), we snuck in a few questions about that as well.

SPOILER ALERT: Was he frustrated that Adam Arkin’s Zobelle escaped the club’s clutches? No, but it wasn’t what he expected. “[Show creator] Kurt Sutter created a situation there where there could be some pretty intense brutality, and obviously Kurt doesn’t shy away from that stuff, so I was surprised that he didn’t do something very awful and bloody to that guy,” Hunnam admits. “But I asked him about it, and what he said, which I thought was so perfect, was, ‘I just truly believe that guys like this walk away. Bad guys that are that smart and that organized don’t usually go to jail or get caught.’ So, I kinda liked that, and also — and this is based on nothing but my own speculation — it potentially gives an opportunity for him to return later on.”

What did he think when he first read that Jax’s son, Abel, being kidnapped would be the cliffhanger? “I got that scene about four days before we were going to start shooting, and I get to the end and they take the baby, and I’m on the dock screaming, and I collapse [Laughs] and my father catches me, and I’m just thinking, How in the f— are we gonna shoot this in two hours and it not be a disaster? To do a scene like that, it just takes a lot of preparation for me, a lot of time sitting by myself, meditating, imagining the reality of that scenario. I don’t have a child, but I know what it is to love something. I can imagine the love a parent must feel for their child. We managed to carve out a little bit more time, but obviously, a schedule like that doesn’t leave a lot of time for that type of stuff. So a little shortcut is using music to help you find that place.” What music did he use? “If memory serves, I was listening to a couple of tracks from the tribute concert Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man. Teddy Thompson sings a couple of covers on that [“Tonight Will Be Fine” and “The Future”] that are absolutely heartbreaking.”

What is he hoping Season 3 brings for Jax? “I guess I just hope he finds a little peace,” Hunnam says. “I hope that he doesn’t go too far off the rails. Even being as far away as you can possibly get from being gangster — which is myself [Laughs] — I just know that if my child was taken, I would go kill everybody. So I can only imagine how Jax is gonna react…”
