Would you watch a TV show about Anthony Kiedis?

I am a moderately enthusiastic Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, but even I’m not quite sure what could have possessed HBO to greenlight an hourlong drama series about the childhood of frontman Anthony Kiedis. Really, HBO? A scripted biopic about a living/active musician is a weird enough idea, but making it an ongoing TV show — and focusing the whole thing on Kiedis’ “unconventional, rock ‘n’ roll” relationship with his drug-slinging dad in the ’70s instead of his years as an actual rock star? Sounds like a case of what my mother would call, “Somebody had an idea.” Unclear what exactly that idea was or why anyone thought it was a good one, but there you go.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself, though. Like I said, I dig a lot of the Chilis’ music, and I’ve been wrong about them in the past. (I honestly never thought I could possibly need a double album from them in my life before I heard 2006’s Stadium Arcadium and found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable nostalgia trip.) And what else is Kiedis supposed to do with his creative energy while the Chilis remain on hiatus and Flea studies at USC? So hey, sure, I’ll watch a couple episodes of this show if it makes it to air. Will you? Come on, you know it can’t be worse than John from Cincinatti.
