Coen brothers win Directors Guild top honors

Joel and Ethan Coen won the DGA Award in the category of feature-film directing for their big-screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy?s No Country for Old Men. The other nominees in this category were Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood), Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton), Sean Penn (Into the Wild), and Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly).

The brothers, who are also among this year?s best director Oscar nominees, accepted their award before a crowd of about 1,500 guests who attended the guild?s 60th anniversary gala, held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza. Among the presenters were Josh Brolin, Daniel Day Lewis, Helen Hunt, and Ellen Page.

The Coens’ award bodes well for their Oscar chances: Only six times since the DGA?s prize for best feature film direction was first handed out in 1949 has the winner not gone on to take home a best director Oscar.
