The DGA Nominees: Guild by association

Big surprise, there were no surprises today when the Directors Guild of America announced its list of nominees for its top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2006. (Or, as Oscar prognosticators call it, pretty close to a sure thing; the DGA winner has taken home the Best Director Oscar 51 out of 57 times.) Bill Condon (Dreamgirls), Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), Stephen Frears (The Queen), and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel) all got their first DGA feature nods. Cited for The Departed, perennial bridesmaid Martin Scorsese (pictured) was nominated for a seventh time, though he did win the DGA’s coveted Consolation Pr– sorry, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. You’ll notice that this list is identical to that for the Producers Guild‘s top honor, and if you replace The Queen with Bobby, you get the roster of the Screen Actors Guild‘s big contenders. (Hmm, you may call it chance, I call it a harbinger.) Anyway, the point is: still no awards-season love for Lady in the Water‘s M. Night Shyamalan.
