The Bridge

In 2004, filmmaker Eric Steel shot the Golden Gate Bridge, the most popular destination in the world for suicides, during every last hour of daylight. He captured 23 people leaping to their deaths, and if The Bridge, which presents several of those tragedies, sounds ghoulish, it is. As Steel’s telephoto images pick out figures strolling the walkway, then hesitating, we think: Who will be next? We also think: How could Steel keep filming? In fact, he made several calls to authorities to try and save people, but The Bridge crosses a disquieting line. It may be the first poetic snuff film.
