So, did you go to the movies this weekend? Didn’t think so.
Movie audiences for the most part shunned this weekend’s new releases, resulting in the lowest tally for a No. 1 film in over a year. The horror remake The Fog, starring TV fixtures but movie novices Tom Welling and Maggie Grace, was able to score the top spot with a debut of only $12.2 million.
Second place went to Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which slipped only 27 percent in its second weekend to $11.7 million. That put it ahead of the new Cameron Crowe film, Elizabethtown, which premiered with a disappointing $11 million. Despite the presence of stars Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst, the quirky drama simply didn’t intrigue audiences…and the poor reviews certainly didn’t help the case.
Flightplan and In Her Shoes rounded out the top five, each dropping about 40 percent to $6.5 million and $6.1 million, respectively. And the big flop of the weekend was Domino, the Keira Knightley bounty-hunter flick that opened with a horrible $4.7 million. Why pay good money to see that when you can watch Dog the Bounty Hunter at home for free?
