Good Night, and Good Luck

George Clooney’s salute to Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn), the dour straight shooter of postwar TV news, is an energized sliver of history. As Murrow takes on Joe McCarthy, the film generates a small-scale time-capsule fascination, but it has too much reverence for an age when freedom in media hinged on one saintly man.
