Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker; Magic and Medicine

The Coral’s shaggy, shambling brand of Britpop takes a more refined turn on their second album, with guitars steeped in jazz and blues embroidering James Skelly’s crooned vocals over modified shuffle and skiffle beats. Though lacking the self-titled debut’s exhilarating peaks, ”Magic” is more consistent. A 28-minute bonus disc, Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker, restores the rougher edges, especially on the manic ”Migraine,” but with slighter songs.
