Kelly Rowland’s star turn in ”Freddy vs. Jason” doesn’t hit screens until Aug. 15, but she’s already on her way to the awards show. Not for ”Freddy,” which is about as likely to earn Oscar nominations as ”Freddy Got Fingered,” but as the likely star of ”The Seat-Filler,” a romantic comedy set at a Hollywood awards gala. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Destiny’s Child singer is close to signing a deal to star in the film opposite ”Deliver Us from Eva”’s Duane Martin.

In the movie, which Martin coscripted with his wife, actress Tisha Campbell-Martin and Mark Brown, he plays an aspiring lawyer studying for the bar exam who makes ends meet as a seat-filler at showbiz awards ceremonies. At one show, he and one of the star performers (Rowland’s role) fall in love, but she is under the mistaken impression that he’s a rich attorney, not a tuxedo-clad extra. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are producing the movie, which goes before the cameras this weekend in Los Angeles.
