Calling Richard Grieco: Here comes ''21 Jump Street: The Movie''

Remember MGM’s big-screen version of ”The Mod Squad” a few years back? (If you don’t, Claire Danes is probably grateful.) The lack of an audience for that TV-to-screen adaptation about hip, young cops has apparenty not daunted Paramount Pictures. Variety reports that the studio has given the greenlight to another script based on an old TV series about hip, young cops, this one of a more recent vintage. It’s ”21 Jump Street,” the 1987-90 Fox series about five baby-faced narcs who go undercover in a high school.

Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh, who created the series, are writing the screenplay. No word if the story will be updated to the present or stick to the mullets-and-Members Only fashions of the original. Also no word on whether any of the five stars whose careers the show launched — Holly Robinson Peete (of ”Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” fame), early-’90s movie leading man Richard Grieco (last seen playing himself in ”A Night at the Roxbury”), Peter DeLuise, Dustin Nguyen (”V.I.P.”), and some guy named Johnny Depp — will make cameo visits.
