With 30 Emmys, ''Frasier'' breaks awards record

”Frasier” just might make it after all. After winning three statuettes at Saturday’s Creative Emmy Awards, the ”Cheers” spin-off has now earned 30 Emmys, one more than previous record holder ”The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Among ”Frasier”’s wins was one for guest star Anthony Lapaglia, who plays home health care worker/love interest Daphne’s loutish brother.

After ”Frasier” and ”Mary Tyler Moore,” the most Emmy-winning shows are ”Cheers,” with 28; ”Hill Street Blues,” with 26; ”The Carol Burnett Show,” with 25; and ”All in the Family,” with 22. Among shows still on the air, ”ER” and ”NYPD Blue” are tied for second after ”Frasier” with 20 Emmys each.

Starting its bid for ”Frasier”’s top honors is MTV’s ”The Osbournes,” which won its first Emmy on Saturday for outstanding nonfiction programming (reality). ”What a year!” said producer (and star) Sharon Osbourne at the podium, according to E!, who accepted the award with daughter Kelly and top creative officials of the show. Osbourne has limited her personal appearances since being diagnosed with colon cancer over the summer. The moment was clearly overwhelming for Osbourne. ”Ozzy, I love you!” she said.

Other top winners at the ceremony, hosted by ”Saturday Night Live”’s Darrell Hammond, include NBC’s opening ceremonies for the Salt Lake City Olympic Games, HBO’s ”Six Feet Under” and ”Band of Brothers,” ABC’s ”Alias,” and NBC’s ”Will & Grace.”

The Prime-Time Creative Arts Awards are a subset of the Emmy Awards, given by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to honor behind-the-scenes contributions, including those in costume and hair design, cinematography, and visual effects. The primetime Emmys will be presented on Sept. 22, where ”Frasier” stands to extend its lead, with nominations for best comedy series and best actor in a comedy series for star Kelsey Grammer.
