''Vanilla Sky'' beats ''Ocean's Eleven''

In case you didn’t know already, Tom Cruise is a major box office magnet. His substantial star power drove his decidedly bizarre drama ”Vanilla Sky” to the No. 1 movie slot this weekend, bringing in an impressive $25 million.

That figure may pale in comparison to last week’s $38.1 million ”Ocean’s Eleven” debut, but that heist flick had much more going for it: a larger A-list cast, a comedic tone, and perhaps most important, a PG-13 rating. And while the love-it-or-hate-it reaction to ”Vanilla Sky” will likely keep it from blockbuster status, its opening surpassed that of Cruise’s last edgy drama, 1999’s ”Eyes Wide Shut,” which premiered with $21.7 million. ”Vanilla”’s strong showing pushed George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s ”Ocean’s Eleven” to second place, finishing close behind with $23.1 million, down 39 percent from last week.

The weekend’s other wide opening was the comedy spoof ”Not Another Teen Movie,” which grossed $13.1 million. Though also rated R, the flick obviously attracted enough fake-ID owners to avoid the horrible openings of similar comedies like ”Freddy Got Fingered” and ”Tomcats.” Sharp marketing, including heavy placement on MTV’s new film show ”Movie House,” successfully spread the word on the entry.

In fourth place was ”Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” which earned another $9.9 million, placing the fantasy in the top 20 grossers of all time. And rounding out the top five was the military thriller ”Behind Enemy Lines,” which earned only $5.5 million. Looks like at least one war will soon be ending.
