Eye for an Eye

There was a time when major studios could depend on audiences to cheer when a character settled a score. But in this wearily modern Eye for an Eye, the filmmakers seem afraid of offending anyone as they try to tell their story — of a lavishly happy suburban mom who seeks street justice after her daughter is raped and killed by a lowlife (Kiefer Sutherland) — in an evenhanded way. They also waste Ed Harris as Sally Field’s strong husband, and even worse, give short shrift to Cynthia Rothrock, the female kickboxing queen whose own videos resolve such conflicts during the opening credits.
