'The Brady Bunch Movie': Mike & Carol & Kids & Alice

The Brady Bunch Movie won’t hit big screens until March 1995. But even then, the Bradys will still be stuck happily in the early 1970s — just as they were during the TV show’s five-year run — as they fight to save their home from evil modern-day land developers. Mike and Carol Brady have been lovingly re-created by Shelley Long (Cheers) and Gary Cole (Midnight Caller), and their brood has been fashioned from brand-new look-alikes. But expect cameos from all the original kids from the TV show-except for Eve ”Jan” Plumb and Maureen ”Marcia” McCormick-and even an appearance by Ann B. Davis, though the role of Alice will be played by Henriette Mantel. Feeling deja vu already? The meticulously re-created sets will only add to the dizziness. Here’s the story:

1. The Details Lucky production designer Steven Jordan ”stumbled upon” this equine sculpture, which was actually used in the series, carefully preserved in the Paramount Studios prop department.

2. The Dead Ringer Clearly, the award goes to Christine Taylor, who plays Marcia. ”As I was growing up (in Allentown, Pa.) a lot of people started telling me how much I looked like Maureen McCormick,” she says. ”But never in a million years did I think I would be wearing double-knit polyester and have my hair parted in the middle.”

3. The House Jordan copied each architectural element — including the groovy stained-glass window — when rebuilding the home’s interior. Alas, the house in Los Angeles used for the series’ exterior shots had been altered, so a facade was constructed around an existing home in Encino, and the front lawn was replaced with Astroturf.

4. The Wig Long’s $3,000 wig is modeled on Carol Brady’s latter-day hairdo, rather than on the coif she wore early in the series’ run; the shag and flip, explains key hairstylist Dione Taylor, ”has a better comedic value to it.”
