A Studio 54 movie is in the works

Disco fans who couldn’t make it past the hipper-than-thou doormen at Studio 54 may finally catch an inside glimpse of the exclusive ’70s hot spot. A movie about the gloriously decadent Manhattan nightclub, haunt of such fun-loving sorts as Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger, Liza Minnelli, Halston, and Calvin Klein, is in the preliminary stages of development at Sandollar Productions.

Made with the ”informal” consent of hotelier Ian Schrager, who founded Studio 54 in 1977 with his partner, the late Steve Rubell, the movie will not focus on the club’s well-known drug culture. And casting will also be ”delicately” handled, according to Sandollar’s copresident of motion pictures, Howard Rosenman, who promises, ”This project is certainly not going to offend any of our friends.” Rosenman, who’s searching for a screenwriter, believes in the vast dramatic and historic potential of the Studio experience. ”Studio 54 became the hallmark for an era of fun,” he says. ”It was totally magic.”
