Ethiopia has the second-largest youth population in Africa with about 37.4 million people aged 10–24 years. According to our partner, Ulandssekretariatet - DTDA, the country has one of the fastest growing workforces in the world and its puts a huge strain on job creation. And this is the challenge, a challenge that Danish Industry's partner, the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations seeks to resolve. But where do we start? It seems a natural place to start is skills development. Ensuring that Addis Ababa Chamber of commerce and sectoral Association takes an active role towards supporting skill development- skills for today and the future. That way, they will help transform the demographic challenge, into a resource to be harnessed. A real dividend to the labour market. And last week, as part of our long-term partnership with AACCSA, we were in Ethiopia, co-creating the AACCSA Skills Development Strategy. With the assistance of DI’s skills development stalwart, Anja Trier Wang, we dialogued, on how private sector leadership can support skills development. About how AACCSA can strategically position itself to strengthen skills development. Anja provided a lot of inspiration from Denmark’s duo-training experience, but a lot of emphasis was on skills development reforms that are alive to the country’s immediate context. DI East Africa’s Millicent Kariuki, provided the context that was a little closer home. Sharing experiences and learning from success but also challenges of skills-development reforms in East Africa. Our engagement with Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations on skills development, continues. It’s our investment in the faith and abilities of Ethiopian’s young people.
