For the first time in over a decade, Venezuela's opposition has a tangible chance of winning power through democratic elections. With the national elections scheduled for July 28, González holds a significant lead in the polls. Despite this lead, the road to victory is fraught with challenges. The regime of Nicolás Maduro, which has already disqualified key opposition candidates like María Corina Machado, might still attempt to manipulate results or suspend the elections. International pressure, particularly from the United States, is critical to ensuring that Venezuelan voters' rights are respected. In his conversation with Ambassador Mark Green on July 18th, President and CEO of The Wilson Center, González outlined his vision for rebuilding Venezuela’s democracy and addressing the severe economic and humanitarian crises that have driven nearly 8 million Venezuelans to flee the country since 2014.
