Advocacy is essential for all nonprofit organizations! We here at the Osceola Council on Aging consistently strive to make our voices heard at a local, state and federal level. In Washington last week, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee passed the Older Americans Act Reauthorization Act (OAA) in a 20-1 vote! This bipartisan bill authorizes a funding increase of 20% to $2.76 billion in 2025 across Older American Act programs. Over the next five years, the bill would authorize a 44% funding increase to $3.3 billion in 2029. Of extreme importance to our Osceola County senior adult population is that the bill would increase funding levels for Congregate meals from $530 million in 2024 to $669 million in 2025 and, for Home-delivered meals from $268 million in 2024 to $339 million in 2025. During the Senate hearing, Senator Chris Murphy (CT) outlined the need to prioritize community-based programs and highlighted the important work done by Meals on Wheels programs who have a critical impact on the well-being of seniors in local communities like ours. https://lnkd.in/eVc_SY5j There is still a long way to go before Congress reauthorizes the OAA, but this is an important step forward. We must all continue to advocate, for the benefit of so many individuals! On behalf of our team, thank you for your partnership and support.

This week, the Osceola Council on Aging was very happy to offer 48 backpacks filled with supplies to Family Partnerships of Central Florida (formerly Embrace Families & Brevard Family Partnership), for their back-to-school event. This collaboration will certainly go a long way to ensure local children are off to a great start for the school year. Many thanks to everyone participating in this true act of kindness!

Such as great opportunity to talk partnership with Karlye B. M. and the amazing employees with United Against Poverty Inc. in Orlando this week. Addressing food insecurity throughout all generations is so necessary. It takes a village. We must continually collaborate!
