This increased the cost incurred by the farm owners to raise their feeder cattle and impacted farm production. ◾On the production side, various meat processing facilities were either closed or operating at reduced capacity due to infections among the workers. ◾Animal farm owners were thus left with limited options to sell their animals in various meat processing facilities. They were forced to euthanize the animals, which impacted their revenue generation in the cattle market. Hence, they reduced their animal production, causing an impact in cattle slaughtering in meat processing facilities and a hike in cattle prices. Eid-ul-Azha 2024 and some points to be noted for red meat and hides & skins ---Farukul Islam, PhD Animals like cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep and camel were sacrificed in the EID-ul-Azha. This year 1 crore 29 lacs 80 thousand and 367 animals were ready for this noble purpose. According to reports published in the dailies more or less 1 crore 6 lacs animals were sacrificed in the ‘Eid. Huge hides and skins were produced in these days of sacrifices but prices of raw hides and skins is fluctuating and in some areas people cannot sell it and suffers lot . Red meet scarcity in the country is reported and seen regularly. Though it is available and affordable to the well-off consumers but till now it is not affordable for consumers of all walks. I have not found any published report on red meat availability and demand, though DLS publishes reports regularly on total meat basis. According to DLS in fiscal year 2022-2023 meat production was 8.71 Million Metric Tons but demand was estimated 7.6 MMT. The data refers to surplus of meat but, I am pretty sure most of the amount is of white meat. Above information indicates: 1. Necessity of estimation of amount of demand and production of red meat and white meat separately. 2. Hides and skins processors to be equipped with rules and regulations to set rationale prices of raw hides and skins. 3. Farmers to be inspired with subsidies in different forms like feeds costs minimization, transport facilities like special trucks or trains could be allocated for animal keepers without fare, special hat and other facilities could be provided for animal keepers etc. 4. We discussed food security, safety, animal health, agri-tech, and sustainable agriculture with Vietnamese officials and renewed our partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for 2023 and beyond. I enjoyed speaking at the USFRA — US Farmers & Ranchers in Action webinar hosted on August 30th. We discussed balancing needs at the meat case and I highlighted some key industry trends and insights into today’s meat consumer: 1. It’s no longer enough to just put #sustainability language on a package – expect consumers to do their research. 72% of consumers say they use labels or third-party certifications to confirm a product’s sustainability credentials. This means documentation and working with industry partners to verify sustainability commitments is needed to resonate with today’s consumers. (Sustainable Brands in partnership with Ipsos, Socio-Cultural Trends, March 2022) 2. To consumers, well-cared-for animals produce sustainable, higher-quality meat. Four in 10 consumers look for animal welfare claims and associate animal welfare with quality. Animal welfare must be a part of the sustainability and quality message now.
