“Let’s shoot everywhere, we’ll sell whoever comes” I don’t think so… Does a startup need to define its first customers? This week I finished my course in strategy and entrepreneurship by The Wharton School and here are my main learnings and one bibliography from VC factory at the end to explain more: At the beginning, a startup needs to choose its customers. The market needs to be big enough to be attractive, but not so big, so you can dominate it. A good example is Facebook dominating Harvard market. Keep 3 things in mind when deciding your customers: - Product market fit: It doesn't need to be scalable at the beginning, it just needs to meet the needs of a small group of users who are desperate. With head on fire. The idea is to focus on penetration and retention - Referenceability: Will your first customers help you have the next customers? They have a reputation and a name? Furthermore, your first customers need to be those who will teach you the most about the problem. - Coherence: To what extent does the current market hinder me in gaining other clients? Selling the same technology to schools and the army can make the army find your technology insufficient. And if Nestle sells hospital food, would customers, after returning from hospitalization, want to eat it at home? Day 2 (one day late) Yesterday I delivered a presentation on HI*-AI for Entrepreneurship: Low Fidility Entrepreneurship Education for Non-Entrepreneurs. Yes I know it's a mouthfull. Although I wrote a short paper covering this, my presentation was actually on a workshop methodology I use to expose non-entrepreneurs to entrepreneurship. I propose a highly interactive 4 hour workshop, for students not interested or aware of entrepreneurship, during which they they go though 15 prompts to help them ideate. I also borrowed TeachingEntrepreneurship.org "Pilot Your Purpose" exercise to help students self-reflect (I highly recommend that you get a copy of this worksheet). I think the presentation was well received and at least two Honoris United Universities institutions have asked me to run the workshop with their faculty. *HI stands of Human Intelligence (although I think Human Intervention is a better definition).
