✍ 🎓 New Chapter 📚 Academic Writing Tools for Postgraduate Students in Architecture and Building Engineering ------------------ Alexis Pérez Fargallo, Laura Marín Restrepo, MURIEL DIAZ, Jesús Alberto Pulido Arcas ------------------ Academic writing is an essential competence at the postgraduate level due to its impact on communication, formulations, scholarship awards, evaluation processes, and assigning resources. Acquiring the skills to produce quality communication in a timely manner is a difficult task. Therefore, this chapter presents validated tools to support young researchers as they develop the necessary skills. The tools presented in this research were identified through a systematic review examining the various academic writing tools available to postgraduate students to enhance their writing process. The review aims to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of these tools in improving writing skills, productivity, and the overall quality of academic writing. A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted, and relevant studies published between 2010 and 2023 were included. The results highlight a range of tools, including writing software, reference managers, grammar checkers, plagiarism detectors, and productivity apps. Tools were classified into strategies, techniques, and resources. The findings provide insights into the benefits and limitations of these tools, as well as their impact on postgraduate students’ academic writing experiences. The role of sustainable urban planning is key for the development of green, socially inclusive, and financially sustainable cities and regions. In this sense, there is a clear need to provide education and training in urban and territorial planning that is focused on the generation of sustainable and smart solutions to the specific challenges of a region. Despite its importance, few Higher Education Institutions offer urban and territorial planning as a standalone degree in Latin America. New Sustainability Paradigms for Inclusive and Smart Latin-American Cities (POLIS) has the objective of helping to create solutions for overcoming the environmental and social difficulties in Latin America and to promote the employability of university students, through the development of a specialised study programme based on the social and environmental needs of the region. The main outcome of POLIS will be the design and implementation of a Specialisation Course on Urban and Territory Planning in six universities of Peru, Chile and Ecuador: a postgraduate interdisciplinary course that will focus on the competences and knowledge needed for participatory urban planning to develop sustainable, smart and inclusive cities. POLIS will contribute to an increase of experts in sustainable planning and smart cities in Peru, Chile and Ecuador, who will have the necessary transversal and specific competences as well as direct links to local communities for participatory processes to design the green smart cities of the future. https://lnkd.in/gv5xmMMq

Happiness: A Fundamental Quality for Successful Public Spaces? Our journey into urban happiness and mental health studies began in 2014 when I proposed that Sahar(sahar samavati) work on the "Happy City" concept, inspired by Charles Montgomery significant book, and apply it to Iranian cities. Sahar excelled in her master's thesis under my supervision, establishing a foundation for urban happiness studies in Persian literature and exploring the topic within an international context. In 2015, a message from Layla McCay and the publication of my interview in the Journal of Urban Design and Mental Health blog (https://lnkd.in/dnWRGtkg) motivated us to publish our first paper titled “The Effect of Physical Stimuli on Citizens' Happiness in Urban Environments: The Case of the Pedestrian Area of the Historical Part of Tehran” in the journal (https://lnkd.in/d6YQiWG8). This paper was instrumental in facilitating our collaboration at the World Health Summit in 2019. We expanded on this topic in Sahar’s Ph.D. thesis. Her visit to the Netherlands and collaboration with Ruut Veenhoven ween and pieter desmet further enriched our studies. This paper offers a holistic perspective on happy public spaces, and we have conducted experiments in Tehran’s public spaces, which are in the final stages of preparation for publication. I am grateful for the constructive feedback from the Cities & Health journal during the review process, which enhanced our work. New publication (open access): Planning and design for long-term neighborhood adaptability: an investigation of the formation and evolution of Kreuzviertel in Dortmund, Germany … I have been interested in understanding different approaches to large-scale urban development and neighborhoods for several years. In the past, I focused on why certain "instant" neighborhoods, built all at once and from scratch, tend to be anti-adaptive and reluctant to incorporate the necessary incremental adjustments required to keep an urban area flexible and up to date. The tendency to design new urban transformations in this manner was consolidated in the twentieth century and still influences many contemporary urban projects. Conversely, many urban neighborhoods built before the twentieth century exhibit the capacity to generate urbanity and have shown the ability to incorporate long-term, slow-paced adaptations. These areas are also often highly appreciated aesthetically, not just for their physical appearance. However, there is a shortage of studies analyzing the codes and institutions that made their slow, open-ended, and incremental evolution possible and the reasons and factors contributing to their success. In a humble but, I believe, comprehensive and meticulous manner, this article carefully considers this issue. It investigates the design and evolution of Kreuzviertel in Dortmund, Germany, a highly appreciated neighborhood often indicated as a "place to be" by many Dortmunders. This work contributes to the studies and observations related to my insatiable interest in understanding how it is possible to design urban transformations capable of incorporating high levels of spontaneity and vitality. It results from almost two years of research and one very long year of publication. I hope some of you will appreciate the effort.

Synthesis Paper - Assessing social value in housing design: contributions of the capability approach A conceptualisation of #social value in the built environment is provided from the perspective of the #capability approach (CA). The CA offers a promising approach to architects, designers and policymakers. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the discussion in the field of architecture by drawing on the theoretical framework of the CA and by focusing on the design aspects of social value (SV). The intention is to contribute to the wider discussion on the evaluation of SV and quality of life as well as to propose the CA as a valid theoretical and methodological base to assess the SV created by the built environment, particularly in the context of advanced economies.
