The investment on becoming more sustainable in the fashion industry is still extremely small. Even a brand like Ganni whom many consumers see as sustainable published in their report for 2023 that they spent 0.60% of total revenue on responsibility down from 2022 1.10%. This week seeing the closure of brands such as Mara Hoffman is also depressing. The only effort to move the needle has mainly been driven by a combination of legislation and more mindful production of goods. The system is still flawed due to its drive for continuous projection of double digit sales increases. The saddest part is the huge increase of product thru Shein and Temu flooding the market with cheap, questionable labor and possible toxic product at an accelerated rate never seen before. For those who are not aware From 2017 through to the first half of 2023, Shein revenues grew 20x, from $1.5 billion to $40 billion, surpassing Amazon as the single most downloaded shopping app in the US while racing past Zara for the overall number one spot in US fast fashion.  The fair wage and abuse of garment workers is another problem created by low priced fast fashion. The take away sadly from this years Global Fashion Summit is that though there is some investment in innovation we simply are not moving as an industry fast enough to reduce emissions nor improving the system to produce less. I wish on this Friday I had better news but sadly we need consumers and leaders to drive real change.

👟 Zendaya x On: The New Cool Collab Swiss footwear brand On has been growing and challenging bigger footwear brands, especially in the running shoe and lifestyle shoe categories. Their latest announcement is a partnership with Zendaya, the young actress who is quickly becoming a cultural icon. This multi-year brand partnership between Zendaya and On includes her being featured in marketing campaigns and reimagining different product lines. The announcements so far do not describe the creation of any Zendaya specific products, like her own shoe. Zendaya best reaches young, cosmopolitan audiences sitting across cultural industries like film, music, and fashion. A lot of On's growth has been amongst young urban professionals, a demographic group who is very likely to admire Zendaya and follow her on social media. Recent On collabs include the luxury fashion brand Loewe and the singer FKA Twigs, which respectively reach more wealthy and indie/artsy audiences. What Zendaya wears is highly watched across a more mainstream audience, which likely makes this On's single biggest brand partner in terms of broad reach. As part of Young Hollywood's A-List, Zendaya surely received offers from the major sneaker brands like Nike and Adidas. Her decision to partner with On indicates the powerful cache that the brand is building and could inspire others to work with On as well. It's a good starting point for the collaboration but what comes next is just as important. While On has made a splash with the Zendaya announcement, how they actually work together moving forward will help determine whether or not she can actually contribute to On's growing momentum. On's priorities to grow their apparel business brings them into closer competition with companies like Lululemon and Alo yoga. As the #ParisOlympics draw closer day by day, the Paris Organizing Committee has been gradually unveiling the luxury brands involved in the preparations. Many people, upon seeing this 'dream team' of #fashion, jokingly say, 'Those in the know understand the French are hosting the Olympics, but those who don't might think they're hosting Fashion Week.' For elite athletes, the quadrennial Olympics is the most important stage of their careers. For regular spectators and sports enthusiasts, there are countless aspects worthy of attention and discussion. The romantic French have turned 'fashion' into a key theme of this Olympics. In line with the 'Olympic Fashion Week' vibe, many countries have put a lot of effort into designing their outfits for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as their competition uniforms. As the host nation, France’s designs are absolutely stunning, given their innate sense of romance and fashion. The opening and closing ceremony outfits are designed by Berluti. For a sporting event, these designs seem to transcend the typical boundaries of #sportsfashion. The lapels pay homage to France's three iconic colors—red, white, and blue—yet it's not just a simple 'walking flag.' The men’s tailcoat designs exude an elegant 'old money' vibe, while the women’s skirts or pants showcase diverse and dynamic femininity. The Three Reasons to Choose Luxury Second-Hand Over Fast Fashion: 💡Reason #1 - Numbers Can Be Deceptive: A recent study conducted by Vestiaire Collective reveals a surprising conclusion: buying second-hand luxury items can be more economical in the long run than succumbing to the allure of fast fashion. Take the example of a Zara trench coat, which is cheaper to purchase but of lower quality. With an estimated deterioration cost of $4.82 per wear, it proves to be an unwise expense over a short to medium period of time. In contrast, a Burberry trench coat costs only $0.89 per wear. Thus, although it is more expensive to purchase, the intrinsic quality of the product allows it to have four times the durability on average compared to a fast-fashion piece. 🔄 Reason #2 - Beyond Cost, There's Behavior: Fast fashion not only entails a high cost per wear; it also encourages overconsumption and rapid depreciation of clothing to follow fleeting trends. Seasons are no longer respected, collections are churned out, and consumers find themselves in a continuous cycle of stimulation. Hot take: How brands deploy Digital Product Passports will determine whether they take hold among the general population or just become a regulatory burden: • RIMOWA added NFC-powered Certificates of Ownership to their luggage. (Aleksija Vujicic had an interesting write-up last month about the opportunities they missed, though.) • Coach uses DPPs to facilitate access to end-of-life options (reuse/resell/recycle). • HUGO BOSS customers can use the digital ID embedded in their jackets to access IRL events, take ski lifts, and pay contactless. These are, in different shapes and forms, applications that have usefulness in the customer’s day-to-day. For the customer, they’re one more window into the brand’s universe; for brands, they’re a vehicle of customer engagement and a source of zero-party and first-party data. As DPPs become mandatory in Europe, I think players such as the Aura Blockchain Consortium, Seamm, and Arianee will play an increasingly important role in not simply enabling compliance, but showing brands how to use a regulatory shift to their advantage.
